When There is No Family Caregiver

As people age there are a number of things that go from useful to imperative, not the least of which is a family caregiver.

While there are a number of useful resources and facilities in our community and others, there are generally significant gaps that are best dealt with by a family caregiver.

But what happens when there is no family caregiver waiting in the wings to care for you as you age? A recent article published by AARP detailed the challenges and how to overcome them when you are aging alone.

The first consideration, according to the article, is to consider the future before you get too old – how and where do you want to age. Of course, the article also suggests that you get all your legal documents in order.

Another suggestion is to develop a social network. While having those in your social network will likely not be an option for any serious care, they may be able to help when you are not feeling well or recovering from an illness.

The article refers to people who have no younger family to serve as caregivers as “elder orphans,” and one suggestion is to create a Facebook group so at the very least you can communicate with each other and not feel isolated.

Finally, the article suggests some creative thinking by adopting a family. If you have no one to designate as heirs, you can consider adopting a family. In return for them helping you, they can become your heirs.

The important thing is to prepare in advance to avoid being alone in your elder years.
