National Caregiver Month

November is recognized as National Caregiver Month with a theme this year of “Caregiving Around the Clock.”

This theme is fitting as caregiving is a full-time job, and for most people it comes on top of what already may be a full-time job.

The Caregiver Action Network, in creating the theme for National Caregiver Month 2017, highlighted just some of the activities in an average 24-hour period for caregivers.

It starts early in the morning. On top of dealing with the person for which you may be the primary caregiver, you are likely dealing with a spouse and children – making sure everyone has what they need to get off to work or school.

In most cases, it is the caregiver who manages medication – not the patient. So it is likely you spend a good amount of time each day making sure those medications are taken. Additionally, more than half of family caregivers work, so they have to juggle work hours with caregiving time.

In the evening, you may be taking care of family nutrition needs, as well as those needs for the person you are caring for. The evening is usually the only time of day when caregivers can get a few minutes for themselves.

Finally, there’s the middle of the night. While there won’t be issues every night, you certainly have to be prepared for them. They can be as simple as a reassuring phone conversation to having to take a loved one to the emergency room.

We will have several opportunities to recognize caregivers this month. Both the city of Gainesville and Alachua County will be issuing proclamations, plus we are participating in Elder Options Caregiver Celebration on Thursday, Nov. 16. You can learn more about that by emailing Tom Rinkoski at rinkoskit@agingresources.org or calling (352) 692-5226.

Without family caregivers, the system we as a nation use to care for our older community would be doomed to fail. If you are a family caregiver, you should be recognized year-round but especially this month. Because we all know the challenges you face result in Caregiving Around the Clock!
