Medicare Open Enrollment Period is Here

The all-important Medicare Open Enrollment Period for 2020 starts this Tuesday, Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7. For those on Medicare, this is the time of the year when you can change your Medicare health plans and prescription drug coverage for the following year to better meet your needs.

Even if you are happy with your current coverage, plans can change from year to year. So, it is imperative that if you are in a Medicare health or prescription drug plan, you should always review the materials in your plans.

You can do that by reviewing the “Evidence of Coverage” (EOC)  you received in the mail. If your plans are changing you also received an “Annual Notice of Change” (ANOC). If you are satisfied that your current plans will continue to meet your needs for next year, and it’s still being offered, you don’t need to do anything.

If you do want to make changes, or if the plan itself is changing, you need to talk to your provider during the open-enrollment period.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services provided excellent information about the open-enrollment period. To see that information, click here. For specific plan information, you can go to the Medicare website or call 1-800-MEDICARE.

And here’s one important note of caution. Scammers work year-round to take advantage of our seniors – especially during the open-enrollment period. Don’t respond to unsolicited calls about your Medicare coverage. Never offer your Medicare number to someone unless you are absolutely confident that you are dealing with a legitimate person. Medicare itself will never ask you for your Medicare number. If you have any uncertainty talk to someone you know and trust. To learn more about how you can combat Medicare fraud, click here.
