Older Americans Month and COVID-19

Annually, we set aside May to recognize Older Americans. And while this year is no exception, seniors are in our thoughts more than ever in May 2020.

That’s because, as an age group, they are most at risk for severe complications or death from Covid-19.

And while we have all become familiar with the symptoms to look for related to Covid-19 – most commonly fever, insistent cough and shortness of breath – a recent report from Kaiser Health News indicates, there are several atypical symptoms when it comes to older adults.

In fact, the report said seniors may have none of the common symptoms.

Instead, older people may seem a little out of sorts  or not acing the way they normally would in the early stages of infection. Additionally, they may be sleeping more than usual, or they may stop eating.

Other symptoms in seniors could include the following:

  • Unusual apathy or confusion
  • Uncertainty about their surroundings
  • Dizziness and balance issues (more so than usual)
  • Not speaking
  • Collapsing

Seniors are experiencing these atypical symptoms because their bodies are older. As we age, our immune responses any be altered, or other chronic illnesses may interfere with typical signs of infection. And if you are dealing with a senior with cognitive impairment, they may not be able to communicate any of their symptoms.

So, while we are always trying to be aware of what’s happening with our older family members, it is now more important than ever to be cognizant of any issues with them. Their chances of recovery from Covid-19 often depend on how quickly they can be treated.
