World Alzheimer’s Day and Month: What Does It Mean for Family Caregivers?

Every day and every month is significant in the lives of family members caring for loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. But we take time in September to recognize World Alzheimer’s Month and specifically Monday, Sept. 21 – World Alzheimer’s Day.

So, on this day and month, we take the time to help raise awareness about this disease and associated dementia.

This is a disease that impacts more than 5 million Americans of all ages , with the vast majority of them being 65 or older, and 80 percent age 75 or older.

It is projected that, as the number of older Americans grows, so too will the number of Alzheimer’s cases. The expectation is that by the year 2050, 13.8 million Americans 65 or older will suffer from Alzheimer’s.

With these staggering numbers, it is imperative that if you serve as a caregiver for a family member with Alzheimer’s that all of your and their legal and medical documents are up to date and in order.

If there’s one ray of hope for those dealing with this horrible disease and those who will be in the future, it is that research is ongoing to develop the medical breakthroughs to slow, prevent or cure Alzheimer’s disease.

That research costs money, and there is one way we can all help in that effort.

Despite the challenges we all face in the pandemic, the Alzheimer’s Association has developed a unique and safe way for all of us to participate in the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s this year. In Gainesville, it will be Saturday, Oct. 17. If you want to learn more and participate, click here.
