A New Scam Warning From the IRS

The IRS and several tax agencies issued a new warning last week related to scammers taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic.

And, as always, the people most victimized by these scammers are our seniors.

This latest scam, generally in the form of a text, tries to get victims to disclose their banking information by suggesting it is necessary to receive their $1,200 COVID-19 economic impact payment.

“Criminals are relentlessly using COVID-19 and Economic Impact Payments as cover to try to trick taxpayers out of their money or identities,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig, when issuing the warning. “This scam is a new twist on those we’ve been seeing much of this year. We urge people to remain alert to these types of scams.”

According to the IRS warning, the text reads: “You have received a direct deposit of $1,200 from COVID-19 TREAS FUND. Further action is required to accept this payment into your account. Continue here to accept this payment …”

That is followed by a fake web address and website made to look like the IRS.gov Get My Payment website.

The IRS and individual state agencies are reminding taxpayers that they will never send a text requesting banking information.

If you receive this text, you are asked to take a screenshot and send it in an email to phishing@irs.gov, along with the date, time and time zone where you received the message, the number that appeared on your caller ID and the number that received the text message.

It is unfortunate that we have had to write several times over the last six months about these scams related to the pandemic. As always, you should be careful and only share information with people you know and trust.
