IRS Warning About the Dirty Dozen Series

The Internal Revenue Service recently issued a warning to taxpayers about what it called the Dirty Dozen scam series.

These schemes are referred to as a series by the IRS because the agency has actually been releasing notices about the so-called Dirty Dozen since 2014. All designed for the purpose of tax-related identity theft, these efforts can come in the form of emails, texts, social media messages or phone calls.

The goal of the scammer in these efforts is to try to convince taxpayers that they must provide Social Security numbers, bank account or credit card information or passwords. The scam might include sending links that, if opened, can download malicious software to capture your personal data.

The 2021 Dirty Dozen series has seen an ongoing surge in these scams. While they are most prevalent during tax season, the IRS says they continue throughout the year.

As far as emails, the IRS suggests you delete these correspondences without clicking on or opening any of the links attached to it.

In the case of phone calls, the best advice is to hang up. For text messages or contact by social media, ignore them.

Remember, as we have stated often, the IRS does not initiate contact using any of these methods.
